American Day!!!

As soon as Mikaela and I first met pretty much, we decided that 1/2 way through the course, we'd have American day. Basically all that means is we go to Burger King after school for a little taste of home.
Our lessons for the day were on the future tense and on correcting errors. All of our groupwork examples had to do with American Day and burgers. Steph, Mikaela and I generally sit together and giggle. We DO get our work done though.
We tried out a new place for lunch. It's next door to where we usually go. The usual place is basically made of pastries. There's nothing else in there. Today's place may not be the new hang-out. They basically sell fresh microwave meals and have 4 microwaves. It's supposed to be super health-concious organic, local whatever, we think. I had bow-ties with pesto and pine nuts. We also got chicken croquettes. One of them pooed out its stuffing while it was in the microwave. Not ok. We didn't particularly enjoy them.
After lunch, I had a tough time settling down to make a lesson plan. I just wanted it to be the weekend already!! We want our Burger King!! I did manage to throw something together. My lesson was about the Gold Rush. For my warm-up we talked about what we would do if we got 1 million Euro. One lady thought that wasn't much so I said how about 2? They read the Gold Rush article and really struggled with it. There was lots of lexis that I should have pre-taught that I didn't even realize (I did do some). We ended up just doing the reading and a couple of questions about it and to finish we wrote a story about gold or being rich. There were a lot of things I'd change if I did the lesson again, but no one was observing me for a grade and I really just couldn't have made myself do a better lesson today. I watched Laura's lesson. She's Spanish and has lots of the same problems as the students. She said waiter with a why at the front and couldn't explain the difference between desert and dessert in pronunciation although she brought it up and tried. It sometimes seems strange to have so many people who struggle with English also taking our course on how to TEACH English.
After school, we went to my house so I could change my clothes. Then TO BURGER KING!! I had chicken nuggets in a meal. The Burger King on the Rambla is crazy. It's 2 stories and it serves beer. There were lots of other Americans and lots of other non-Americans. The place was packed. We also got the BK version of a McFlurry to share for dessert (not desert).
Then we went to Mikaela and Steph's house so they could shower and change to go out. We met some of the guys from school out-- the two Swedes and Charlie. We went to an Irish pub near where they live-- at Sagrada Familia. It was funny because Steph said it felt like a bar at home (in England). Mikaela thought it was very authentically Irish too. It was very narrow and cozy with tables and a live band at the far end. The whyters and whytresses all had accents and it served alcoholic cider, Guiness and other Irish things. We had a good time there, although we didn't spot any leprechauns. Maybe next week...
